Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder: Facing a surge in fuel prices and an emerging sensitivity over clean technology,India’s appetite for hybrids is growing steadily.
The Urban Cruiser may be India’s most fuel-efficient SUV, shattering the cliche that any SUV in India is guzzler of fuel.
Global giants Toyota, known worldwide for their hybrid prowess makes for a worthy name to bring to India – the compact SUV with power – is what India has got with the arrival of Urban Cruiser Hyryder.
Co-developed with Maruti Suzuki, the Hyryder borrows its underpinnings and parts from the Grand Vitara.
But the Toyota variant has its own flourish of its own — particularly in the form of an available strong hybrid powertrain, a first for the segment.
Let’s see what makes the Urban Cruiser Hyryder an important player in the highly competitive SUV segment in India.
Exterior: Braves and looks good doing it
The Urban Cruiser Hyryder also has a unique look which differentiates it from other compact SUVs.
The front houses sleek double layer DRL, crystal-effect lens treatment on the LED headlights, and excessive use of chrome embellish the premium feel.
The bumper is fitted with a large air dam and gets LED projector headlamps that lend aggression to its design.
From the sides it is a nicely-proportioned design with clean lines, squared off wheel arches and roof rails that create a pleasing look of an SUV. Its athletic styling is further accentuated by the 17-inch alloy wheels.
Wraparound LED tail lamps and a glossy black insert at the rear also enhance its contemporary appeal. And in general it’s a good blend of modern design and practicality.
Interior and Features
Step inside and the Hyryder greets you with a sleek, well-made cabin. The dash design is clean and mirror image. Toyota has deployed a dual-tone black-brown (or all-black in some trims), and the dash gets soft-touch materials.
The steering wheel is wrapped in leather, and the quality overall feels premium for the price you’re paying.
The 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system is compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and the 7-inch digital instrument cluster is bright and easy to read. Other key features include:
Panoramic sunroof
Wireless charger
Ventilated front seats
Head-up display (HUD)
Rear AC vents
360-degree camera
Cruise control
Ambient lighting
Toyota offers a Hyryder that is rich in features and not overwhelming.
Performance and Hybrid Tech
The Hyryder is available with two petrol engine options:
Neo Drive (mild hybrid): 1.5L K-series engine with integrated starter generator (shared with Maruti).
High Power Hybrid: A 1.5L TNGA Atkinson cycle engine with electric motor and battery strength.
The 115 PS system has strong hybrid power as well as the ability to run on electric alone at low speeds. Power is sent to the e-CVT transmission, which is surprisingly smooth even in stop-go traffic.
We’ve driven the mild-hybrid model already, and we found that it feels lively enough, but it’s really at home in town use.
According to Toyota, the strong hybrid can deliver a fuel efficiency of up to 27.97 km/l which will make it one of the most frugal SUVs on sale in India.
Ride quality is nicely balanced. It’s not the most graceful city car, but it goes over potholes and broken patches of pavement smoothly.
The steering is light, visibility is good and the cabin is well insulated from road noise.
Safety and Variants
Safety features include:
6 airbags (top variants)
ABS with EBD
ESC
Hill-hold assist
Hill start assist / Hill descent control (only for AWD version)
ISOFIX mounts
Rear parking canensors and camera
Variants are well covered, AWD also available for the adventurous, but is missing from the mild-hybrid manual version.
